Julian Edmund Woods (1859–1937)

Woods, Julian Edmund Tenison (c.1859-1937) journalist and trade union official 

Birth: 4 January 1859 at Walkerville, Adelaide, South Australia, son of English-born parents from Surrey, James Dominic Tenison Woods (1826-1905), a journalist, from Kennington, and Catherine Henrietta, née Griffin (1824-1899) from Southwark. Marriage: 31 October 1889 at Trinity Church, Adelaide, to Alice Maud Douglas (1871-1967). They had five daughters and seven sons. Death: 31 May 1937 in his usual residence at Molesworth Street, North Adelaide. Religion: Catholic. 

  • Was legally trained in his youth. Admitted to Bar later in SA. Was one of five brothers who played for the Norwood league football team; in 1878 he and his brothers Jack and Charlie were members of the Australian championship team.
  • Worked as a proof reader, copy boy, manager and editor of the Daily News, Perth. Chief Sub-Editor, Daily Herald (Adelaide) about 1913.
  • Joined the Australian Journalists’ Association (AJA) in 1913. Member of SA district committee, president in 1914 and 1927-1929, secretary from 1919 to about 1927. SA delegate to federal council meetings of the AJA several times.
  • Good orator. Awarded gold honor badge of the federal council in 1922 for meritorious services. Retired from News Ltd in 1930 due to ill-health.
  • Awarded life membership of AJA on retirement and was presented with honorarium of £100; SA branch awarded him a gold watch.
  • Cause of death: cystitis, carcinoma of prostate and cerebral deficiency.
  • One son Private Charles Julian Tenison Woods died of wounds received in action on 23 July 1916 at Pozieres in France in World War I.
  • The noted Catholic priest and scientist Julian Tenison Woods was his uncle.
