- Worked at Austral Bronze Ltd, Hobart. Joined Federated Ironworkers’ Association (FIA) in 1948 and was elected delegate.
- Was secretary of the Tasmanian branch of the FIA from 1956 until his retirement in 1979; during that time he was re-elected unopposed, and membership grew from 200 to 2000.
- Sometime acting secretary in Hobart of the Trades Hall Council. He was president of the Tasmanian Trades and Labour Council (TLC) for two years and was senior and junior vice-president for several terms. Was president of the Six Hour Day Committee for the Tasmanian TLC.
- Tasmanian trade union representative on the executive of the Australian Council of Trade Unions for two years. Attended ILO Conference, Geneva, in 1971. Made a life member of FIA in August 1979 on his retirement.
- Member of Australian Labor Party and Tasmanian branch treasurer; member of the ALP State executive. Part of Tribune collective in cold war years dealing with issues such as police raids.
- Board member, Tasmanian government’s Consumers’ Protection Board.
