Joseph Wing (1837–1921)

Wing, Joseph (junior) (1837-1921) mining agent, printer and compositor 

Birth: 1837 at London, England, son of Joseph Wing, an accountant, and Isabella Jane, née Haines (1817-1903). Marriages: (1) 2 May 1872 at Moor Street, Fitzroy, Victoria, with the rites of the Victorian Free Church, to Emily Dicketts (1850-1887), a milliner, born in Adelaide, South Australia. (2) 14 April 1887 at Moor Street, Fitzroy, with the rites of the Free Church of England, to Emily Hilman (1855-xx), a dress maker. Death: 2 December 1921 in his home at Bignell Street, Flemington, Melbourne, Victoria. 

  • Joseph was a mining agent, residing at Simpsons Road, Richmond, at his first marriage in 1872, when he gave his age as 35; he was a printer living at Wellington Street, Collingwood, at his second marriage in 1887 when he gave his age as 50.
  • Either he or his father may have been the Joseph Wing who participated in the conference of delegates of Freethought Association in Australia and New Zealand in 1883.
  • From 16 October 1880 he lived at Collingwood. Either he or his father Joseph may have published the ‘Spiritual’ (?) at Sandhurst and the ‘Referment’ (?).
  • Cause of death: myocarditis and heart failure (7 days). On his death certificate his age was given as 89 and his occupation as compositor.
