Frederick Gilbert White (1864-1953) mason, ore buyer, share broker and political activist

Birth: 1 April 1864 at Aldershot, England, son of George Russell Holt White (1824-1896), a captain in the Kentish Buffs, born at Chunar, Bengal, India, and his first wife Elizabeth Martha, née Lees (1841-1972). Marriage: 27 March 1901 at St Peter’s Anglican Church, Broken Hill, New South Wales, to Blanche Eley (1878-1961), born at Alberton, South Australia, daughter of Charles Eley, the general manager of the Silverton Tramway Co. They had one son and three daughters. Death: 23 August 1953, Victor Harbour. South Australia. 

  • Arrived in Adelaide, South Australia, aboard the Lusitania in June 1884. Worked with Elder, Smith & Co.
  • Moved to Broken Hill, New South Wales, in 1886. With Harry Lionel Hosier (c.1868-1928) formed a company, White & Hosier, involved in stock and share broking, which included active ore-buying, share broking and electrical business.
  • In 1913 built a notable private residence in Californian bungalow style at Broken Hill, described by the Barrier Miner as “an ornament to the neighbourhood”.
  • Director of Alaska Ice Cream & Produce Ltd. from its establishment in 1914.
  • Retired to Victoria Harbour, South Australia, about 1952.
  • Was a 'leading right winger' in Broken Hill where he was a well-known identity for more than half a century.
  • Cause of death: carcinoma of oesophagus.
