Sidney Walter Peter (Sid) Tylee (1897-1976) blacksmith and trade union official 

Birth: 21 October 1897 at Highworth, Swindon, Wiltshire, England, son of Walter Alfred Tylee (1875-?), a railway coach painter, born at Bath, Somerset, and Louisa, née Batchelor (1877-1974), born at Swindon, Wiltshire. Marriages: (1) 1922 at Raymond Terrace, New South Wales, to Lily Ellis (1893-1926), born at Williamstown, Wales, United Kingdom. They had a daughter and one son who died in infancy. (2) 1929 at Mayfield, Newcastle, NSW, to May Spark (1888-1941). They had one daughter. (3) 23 January 1954 at Sydney to Isabel Kathleen Bolton (1917-2006). They had one son. Death: 16 December 1976 in his usual residence at Francis Street, Cardiff, Newcastle, NSW. Religion: buried with Anglican rites. 

  • Started work at 14 years of age. Enlisted in the British army in 1914. Served in France with the Royal Field Artillery in World War I and was wounded at Ypres in 1917.
  • Arrived in Australia in 1921. Was involved in steelworks lock-out of Christmas Day in 1921. Elected to Abermain committee on coalfields.
  • Started in Railways Department in 1925. Worked in the Cardiff locomotive workshops. Retired in 1959.
  • Member of Newcastle district committee of the Amalgamated Engineering Union and was shop steward for twenty years. President of Cardiff Shop Committee. Secretary of Picnic Committee.
  • President of Cardiff branch of the Australian Labor Party and delegate to Hunter federal council. In November 1934 and December 1941 was ALP candidate for election to Lake Macquarie Shire Council.
  • President of the NSW Citizens’ Welfare League. Active in the NSW Transport Employees’ Welfare Association, the Cardiff sub-branch of the Returned Services League and the United Protestant Association’s Aged People’s Settlement Scheme.
  • Member of the Protestant Alliance Friendly Society of Australia lodge 212 Cardiff; the Lodge Earl Kitchener, 308, United Grand Lodge of NSW; the Masonic Lodge Hamilton Mark No 35 and Hamilton Royal Arch No 26; the Amalgamated Metal Workers’ Union Retired Members’ Association; the Retired Railway and Government Transport Association; and the Northern NSW Federation of Justices of the Peace.
  • Cause of death: coronary occlusion (sudden), coronary artery disease (10 years), arteriosclerosis (20 years) and hypertension (20 years).
