Arthur Samuel (Sam) Stone (1889-1971) printer, journalist, trade union official and sportsman

Birth: 4 October 1889 at Pyrmont, Sydney, New South Wales, son of James William Stone (1858-1933), an engine-driver, formerly seaman, born at Gravesend, Kent, England, and his first wife native-born Jane Agnes, née Harvey (1868-1901). Marriage: 15 October 1909 at Sydney to native-born Linda Irene Olsen (1891-1973), whose father had been born at Levick Stordoen, Norway. They had one daughter and two sons. Death: 8 October 1971 in his usual residence at Karrabah Street, Auburn, Sydney. Religion: Anglican. 

  • Served apprenticeship in stereotyping in 1905 at a time when his father was out of work. Member of old NSW Typographical Association in 1910 as a final year apprentice.
  • After several years in the trade he moved to a position as a sporting journalist for two years and remained a member of the Australian Journalists’ Association for seven years.
  • Returned to stereotyping. Vice-president of the Stereotypers Union; member of the branch executive in 1926-1931. Office Assistant with union from 1931 to 1936; organiser from 1936 to 1946; assistant secretary, NSW branch, 1936-1952.
  • Elected unopposed as secretary of the NSW branch in 1952 and held office until 1957 (resigned). Councillor and vice-president 1952-1957. Executive member, Sydney Trades Hall Association, and chairman of trustees for three years; member, federal executive 1952-1957 and federal president from 1952.
  • Played first grade soccer at age of 16 and first grade cricket. Represented NSW in soccer in 1909. Manager of NSW Sheffield Shield cricket teams. Managed team for competition in Victoria in 1936, 1947 and 1949, team to Queensland 1938-39 and 1945, and team to South Australia 1947 and 1949.
  • Life member Sydney Cricket Ground, NSW Cricket Association, Cumberland Cricket Club and Granville Soccer Club.
  • Occupation on death certificate, company director. Cause of death: coronary occlusion (hours), congestive cardiac failure (years) and ischaemic heart disease (years).
