Albert Maxwell Robert (Max) Stewart (1912-2017) miner, trade union official and political activist 

Birth: 22 December 1912 at Broken Hill, New South Wales, son of Albert George Stewart (1885-1965), a fireman and labourer, and Agnes Prudence Muriel, née Halliday (1886-1970). Both parents were born in South Australia. Marriage: 22 August 1934 at Broken Hill to Thelma May Bastin (1913-1987). They had one son, who predeceased him, and one daughter. Death: 9 June 2017 at Broken Hill, NSW. 

  • Worked as a labourer and miner in Broken Hill.
  • Joined Broken Hill branch of the Australian Labor Party in 1936. Campaign director for ALP at local, State and Federal levels.
  • Delegate representing Miners' Union of the Barrier District Assembly ALP in 1955. Attended the first Annual Conference of ALP in 1955. Held numerous positions in local ALP units and member of State Central Executive.
  • Councillor of the City of Broken Hill. Member of the board of the Broken Hill and District Hospital.
  • Secretary of the Shop Assistants' Union at retirement.
  • In 1971 was made a life member of the NSW Branch ALP, nominated by Barrier Industrial Assembly. In December 1973 he was appointed a member of the Broken Hill Water Board and was reappointed in September 1978.
  • Also a life member of the Harness Racing Club, Broken Hill, and the Silver City Show.
