John Stevenson ('Wooloomooloo Jack') (1871-?) miner, labourer, trade union official 

Birth: reputedly 1871 in Sydney, New South Wales, son of John Stevenson, watchmaker, and Annie, née French. Marriage: 30 September 1902 with Free Christian church rites at Melbourne, Victoria, to Elizabeth, née Martin, late Phillips, a divorcée. They had a son and daughter born in 1898 and 1901. Death: details unknown. 

  • One of a number of miners blackbanned by Victorian coal companies before the Victorian coal strike of 1903-04. In 1900 was a Jumbunna lodge delegate to the Victorian Coal Miners' Association. 1901 Jumbunna lodge secretary. Dismissed 1902 whilst still lodge secretary & was refused re-employment.
  • Described as a hairdresser on his marriage certificate.
  • Went to Collie Western Australia, where he worked as a labourer. In 1905 was delegate for Cardiff lodge of Collie River District Miners' Union (CRDMU). Same year became lodge president & was unsuccessful candidate for CRDMU presidency.
  • Still lodge president 1906 but appears to have left district thereafter.
