Patrick Murty (Pat) Ryan (1914–1981)

Patrick Murty (Pat) Ryan (1914-1981) tram conductor and trade union official 

Birth: 2 April 1914 at Inverell, New South Wales, son of Phillip John Ryan (c.1890-1960?), travelling salesman, and Queensland-born Imelda Margaret Hazel, née Candrick or Kendrick (1894-1977). Marriage: 1941 at Sydney, NSW, to native-born Phyllis Jean Milen (1911-1994). They had one daughter. Death: 6 March 1981 at Sydney Hospital, usual residence First Street, Ashbury, Sydney. Religion: Catholic. 

  • Active in the Australian Tramways and Motor Omnibus Employees Association from the early 1940s when he was working from the Tempe depot in Sydney.
  • Elected secretary of the State branch of the ATMOEA about 1959; held office until 1975 at least.
  • Joined Inverell branch of the Australian Labor Party in 1932. Gained life membership of the NSW branch ALP in 1979, nominated by ATMOEA.
  • Cause of death: diffuse cerebral damage (12 days), cardiac arrest (12 days), ischaemic heart disease (years), diabetes mellitus (years) and cardiomyopathy (years).
