Percy John Francis Rowe (1889-1948) miner, trade union leader, mayor

Birth: 1889 at Clunes Victoria, son of William John Albert Rowe (1861-1918), a miner born at Moira, Leicestershire, England, and native-born Mary Margaret, née Gavin (1856-1928). Marriage: 1940 at Mildura, Victoria, to Lillian Rose Maisie, née Lee, late Polanski. Death: 20 July 1948 at Broken Hill, New South Wales. Religion: Salvation Army. 

  • Miner in Victoria and Western Australia. To Broken Hill about 1918. Miner on line of lode until 1930 and member of Workers’ Industrial Union of Australia. President, Job Committee at Zinc Corporation. Vice-president WIU of A for two terms.
  • Delegate of WIU of A on Barrier Industrial Executive Council. Executive member, Barrier Industrial Council.
  • Alderman on Broken Hill City Council 1937, mayor from 1939 until death.
  • Member, Barrier Social Democratic Club for many years, president 1934-1948. Citizen's representative on Broken Hill Water Board. Member, Alma Sporting Club. Committee member, Citizens Police Boy's Club.
  • Cause of death: cardiac failure and hyperpiesis. At the burial service, conducted by a Salvation Army minister, the red flag was carried.
