John Cedric Avent (Jack) Rowe (1908-1977) trade union official

Birth: 16 March 1908 at St Arnaud, Victoria, son of native-born parents John Avent Rowe (1866-1949), labourer, and Charlotte, née Dobson (1870-1925). Marriage: 1939 at Victoria to Irene Mary Morrissey (1903-1980). They had one son. Death: 1 December 1977 at Chadstone, Victoria. 

  • Employed with Dunlop Rubber Company at Montague, Melbourne, from late 1930s until 1949.
  • Organiser of the Federated Rubber and Allied Workers Union of Australia 1949-1955; Victorian branch assistant secretary 1955-1960; Victorian branch secretary-treasurer 1960; federal councillor 1940-1974 (retired).
  • Played football for St Arnaud for several years. Brother of a well-known Collingwood footballer and boxer Percy Rowe, known as (Paddy Rowan), a labourer, who served with the 29th Battalion, Australian Imperial Force during World War I and died of wounds on the Somme in France on 5 December 1916.
  • Member of Australian Labor Party.
  • Cause of death: carcinoma of lung with multiple metastasis (1 year).
