Charles Alexander (Charlie) Ross (1897–1981)

Charles Alexander (Charlie) Ross (1897-1981) policeman, caretaker and trade union official

Birth: 1897 at Ferntree Gully, Victoria, son of native-born parents Robert Ross (1870-1957), a farmer of Scottish descent, and Rachel, née Harrison (1874-1954), of Irish descent. Marriage: 1918 at Carlton, Victoria, to native-born Daisy Jones Pearl Walker (1897-1989). They had four daughters and two sons. Death: 12 November 1981 at Ferntree Gully. 

  • Police constable dismissed during Victorian police strike in 1923.
  • Member of the Miscellaneous Workers’ Union (MWU) from about 1932. Victorian branch treasurer of MWU from about 1943 to 1967. Federal councillor, MWU, for nine years.
  • Having worked there since 1924, he was caretaker of the Melbourne Trades Hall Council from 1949 to 1967.
  • Member of the Australian Labor Party from about 1932 to 1967.
  • Retired from union and ALP activities in 1967. Moved with his wife to Fern Tree Gully in retirement.
  • Cause of death: acute myocardial infarction (days), ischemic heart disease (years), chronic renal failure, congestive cardiac failure, infarction of one kidney, abdominal aortic aneurysm, hypertension and cerebrovascular disease.
