Norman Henry Rosewell (1902-1968) fitter on railways and trade union official

Birth: 3 November 1902 at Lithgow, New South Wales, son of native-born parents William Joseph Rosewell (1872-1939), train driver, and Phoebe Dargin, née Wallace (1878-1953). Marriage: 17 June 1922 at St Paul’s Anglican Church, Sydney, NSW, to Frances Mary Flynn (1902-1991), born in Broken Hill. They had one daughter and two sons. Death: 12 January 1968 in his home at Lansdown Street, Eastwood, Sydney. Religion: Anglican. 

  • Worked in NSW Government Railways, for the most part at Eveleigh Carriage Works.
  • Shop steward for twenty-five years and convenor of the Eveleigh branch of the Amalgamated Engineering Union (AEU). Secretary of the Eveleigh branch of AEU for forty years. Trustee on the Commonwealth council of union.
  • Was secretary of the Eastwood branch of the Australian Labor Party in 1932.
  • Had been planning to retire from NSW Government Railways at the time of his death but planned to continue as branch secretary of the union.
  • Cause of death: coronary artery disease and pericarditis (coroner’s report).
