Frank Joseph Rogers (1866-1906) miner and trade union official

Birth: 1866 at Napoleons, near Ballarat, Victoria, son of James Harry Rogers (1823-1867), a journalist born at Narbeth, Pembrokeshire,Wales, United Kingdom, and Frances (Fanny) Morris, née Wade (1836-1866). Unmarried. Death: 15 August 1906 in hospital at Ballarat Berringa, Victoria; usual residence Berringa. 

  • Lived all his life in the Ballarat district. Was a jack-or-all trades after leaving school. Worked as a woodcutter, commercial traveller and sharebroker.
  • Employed as a miner in Creswick alluvial mines and joined Amalgamated Miners Association.
  • Moved to Rokewood about 1896. Formed branch of AMA and became secretary of what later became the Rokewood, Pitfield and Berringa branch of the AMA. Held the position of secretary until shortly before his death. General treasurer of the AMA.
  • Representative at Victorian and Tasmanian union conferences from about 1896. Attended his last conference in February 1906 but did not speak because of poor health.
  • Member of Political Labor Council. Prominent figure in the Rokewood branch of the Australian Natives’ Association.
  • Cause of death: oral sepsis and exhaustion.
