Daniel (Dan) Rogers (1893–1985)

Daniel (Dan) Rogers (1893-1985) miner, trade union leader and shire councillor

Birth: 7 August 1893 at Mundie Creek, Mount Morgan, Queensland, son of Daniel Rogers (1869-1928), a miner, later hotel licensee, born at Methry Hills, Murree, Bengal, India [now Pakistan], and Queensland-born Mary, née Chamberlain (1874-1936). Marriage: 3 April 1918 at Mount Morgan to Gertrude Evelyn Webley (1894-1962), born at Mount Morgan. They had three daughters and one son. Death: 4 January 1985 in hospital at Rockhampton, Queensland. Religion: buried with Uniting Church forms. 

  • Dan began mining in Central Queensland metalliferous mines, Many Peaks and Mt Morgan.
  • He joined the Australian Labor Party in 1911, remaining a member for the rest of his life.
  • With his father he moved to to Hartley, (Qld) in 1923, to work in sinking Styx No.3 shaft.
  • Served at various times as chairman and secretary of the Styx branch of the Miners' Federation. Chairman during 1949 coal strike.
  • Chairman of Ogmore ALP branch for many years, he was Labor councillor on Livingstone Shire Council for twenty-one years. Awarded ALP life membership badge in 1950s.
  • Cause of death: acute exacerbation chronic obstructive airways disease (2 days), chronic obstructive airways disease (10 years), abdominal aortic aneurysm and congestive cardiac failure.
