John McLachlan (Jack) Robertson (1914-1980) steelworker and trade union official

Birth: 1914 at Cessnock, New South Wales, son of native-born parents John McLachlan Robertson (1879-1930), a contractor of Scottish descent, and Josephine, née Piper (1885-1976), whose great-grandfather Edward Piper (1766-1809) was a convict from Sunbury on Thames, Middlesex, England. Unmarried. Death: 12 September 1980 at Newcastle, NSW. 

  • Worked at spun pipe mill at Port Kembla, NSW, and joined the Federated Ironworkers’ Association (FIA) in 1937.
  • Moved to Newcastle steelworks later in 1937 and became member of Newcastle branch of the FIA.
  • Member of the committee of management, Newcastle Branch FIA in 1949. Delegate to National Conference FIA, 1967-1975. Delegate to NSW State Council for about 10 years.
  • Broken Hill Pty Ltd sub-branch secretary for about twenty years. Retired 1975.
  • Cause of death: myocardial infarction (15 minutes) and ischaemic heart disease (3 years).
