Charles Henry (Charlie) Robertson (1875-1935) locomotive driver and trade union official

Birth: 1875 at Paddington, Sydney, New South Wales, son of native-born parents Thomas Henry Robertson (1852-1931), bootmaker, and Margaret, née Connell (1845-1911). Marriage: 1898 at Redfern, Sydney, to Florence Kathleen Lynch. They had three daughters and three sons. Death: 13 April 1935 in his home at Carnarvon Street, Kogarah, Sydney. Religion: Presbyterian. 

  • Locomotive driver at Hurstville, Sydney. Secretary of Mortdale Branch of the Australian Federated Union of Locomotive Enginemen for many years. Divisional president 1918-1929.
  • Assisted E. Drakeford, then federal secretary, in successfully recruiting new members after the strike of 1917 and a decrease in membership. Representative of NSW division at interstate conferences.
  • Retired from union in 1934 due to ill-health. Commemorated with a gathering at Memorial Hall, Hurstville, where he was presented with a wallet of notes.
  • Assisted Labor Party candidates in his district at election times.
  • Cause of death: cerebral haemorrhage (1 day) and arteriosclerosis (1 year 6 months).
