Charles Albert (Chas) Rawlings (1839-1912) carpenter and trade union official                                                                                                                

Birth: 1839 at Somersetshire, England, son of John Rawlings, builder, and Emma, née Starr. Marriages: 1 May 1860 at Falcon Square Chapel, London, to Mary Graham Cameron (1840-1878). They had one daughter and six sons. (2) 1883 at Abbotsford, Victoria, to native-born Isabella Elliot (1850-1917). Death: 17 December 1912 in his usual residence at Cromwell Street, Collingwood, Melbourne, Victoria. 

  • In 1861 England census was a joinery carpenter living at Islington East, Middlesex, London, with his wife and one son.
  • Arrived in Brisbane, Queensland, in 1862. Instrumental in formation of first Carpenters' Society, Brisbane.
  • Moved to Melbourne in 1868. Joined Carpenters' Professional Association. Took a leading part in church and lodge affairs.
  • Appointed one of the original trustees of Melbourne Trades Hall Council from 1870 to 1888 and was treasurer from 1888 until 1912, a few months before his death.
  • Cause of death: heart failure, cerebral haemorrhage and paralysis (6 months).
