William Kernick Phillips (1849-1933) carpenter and trade union official 

Birth: 1849 at Linkinhorne, Cornwall, England, son of Richard Phillips (1824-c.1907), carpenter, and Mary, née Kernick (1827-1875). Marriage: 30 March 1880 at All Saints Church, Paddington, London, to Caroline Job (1849-1931). They had three daughters and three sons. Death: [wrongly registered as “William Frederick”] 2 August 1933 in his son’s residence at Alma Road, Fullarton, Adelaide, South Australia. 

  • Joined Carpenters and Joiners’ Society in Plymouth branch, England, in 1873. Moved to Notting Hill, Kensington branch, about 1876.
  • Arrived in Australia in 1880 with his wife. Obtained employment with Messrs. Brown and Thompson in Adelaide, South Australia.
  • Joined Adelaide branch of the Carpenters and Joiners’ Society. Held minor offices connected with administration of State union. Became secretary of Adelaide branch for about three years and organiser for one year.
  • At guest of Honour celebration for 50 years of service as a unionist in 1923 he was presented with a silver-mounted umbrella, a walking stick, and a wallet of notes. His completion of 60 years membership of the Amalgamated Society of Carpenters and Joiners’ was acknowledged in his obituary.
  • Cause of death: arteriosclerosis and myocardial degeneration (one year or more).
