Jack Petrie (1908-1986) labourer and trade union official

Birth: 1908 at Creswick, Victoria, son of native-born parents Arthur Edward Petrie (1873-1934), hotelkeeper, and Emily Agnes, née Durston (1879-1950). Marriages: (1) 1931 at Melbourne, to Evelyn Scherger, later D’Alton (1911-1994), telephonist. They had one daughter and one son, both of whom predeceased him. The marriage appears to have ended in divorce. (2) 1965 at Melbourne to Valerie Hudson. Death: 17 April 1986 at Fitzroy, Victoria, usual residence Bourke Street, Reservoir. 

  • Joined Storeman and Packers Union. State secretary of the Storeman and Packers Union from 1951 to 1962 succeeding Arthur Kyle. Also state secretary of the Australian Brushware Union.
  • Federal Secretary, Storeman and Packers Union, from 1962, again succeeding Arthur Kyle. Victorian President of the Australian Council of Trades Unions from 1956 for several years.
  • Cause of death: multiple myeloma (2 years), ischemic heart disease (30 hears) and left heart failure (2 years).
