James (Jim) Peter (1882-1963) bank officer and trade union official

Birth 1882 at Parramatta, New South Wales, son of native-born parents William Peter (1851-1896), wool buyer, and Sarah Patience, née Pye (1852-1932). Unmarried. Death: 28 June 1963 in usual residence, Emmett Street, Crows Nest, Sydney. Religion: Anglican. 

  • Joined the Bank of New South Wales in 1901 and worked at head office for most of the period between 1901 and 1930. Worked at Ryde, Hunter's Hill, Five Dock, Rockdale, Chatswood, Earlwood and Burwood branches.
  • Founding member of United Bank Officers' Association (UBOA) of NSW in 1919; executive member 1924-1945 and vice-president from 1930 to 1942. Member of various sub-committees, librarian and prepared material and evidence for association cases in the Arbitration Court. Retired in 1944.
  • Kept close contact with association after his retirement. Trustee of the association from 1945 to his death.
  • Author of the 'Early History of the UBOA of NSW' published in The Banker in its June 1946 edition. Honorary life member UBOA in 1953.
  • Prominent in early formation of 'The Bankers' Club' on behalf of the UBOA of NSW in 1946 and later became treasurer and then manager.
  • Associated with Anglican Church of St Thomas, North Sydney, for many years.
  • Cause of death: cerebral haemorrhage (instantaneous) and hypertension (years).
