Richard John (Dick) O'Halloran (1870-1947) boilermaker and trade union official

Birth: 1870 at Warrnambool, Victoria, son of Richard O’Halloran (1830-1914), farmer, and Mary, née McGrath (1820-1882). Marriage: 1901 to native-born Mary Fitzpatrick (1867-1912). They had no children. Death: 15 October 1947 in his residence at Melbourne Road, Newport, Melbourne, Victoria. Religion: Catholic. 

  • Grew up in Warrnambool, Victoria. Started work at Fitzgerald's drapers at age 12. Worked digging potatoes, road making and in a milk factory.
  • Apprenticeship in boilermaking in 1883-1890. Worked at Newport Workshops.
  • Joined a debating society and met Judge Williams and J. Liston.
  • Joined Boilermakers' Union about 1890. Member, district Committee of the union for forty-six years. Secretary of the Boilermakers' Union from 1913 until 1947, when he retired.
  • President of the federal council of Boilermakers' Society for sixteen years. Secretary of the Iron Trades Council for many years.
  • Cause of death: coronary thrombosis (sudden) and myocarditis (5 years).
