William Singleton Munday (1893-1975) foundry worker and trade union official 

Birth: September 1893 and baptised at Tong, Birstall, Bradford, Yorkshire, England, on 21 January 1894, son of Singleton Munday (b.1866) moulder, and Mary Alice, née Pickles (b.1871). Marriages: (1) 23 December 1914 at Tong Church, Birstall, to Ethel May Staveley (1893-1976). They had two daughters. The marriage ended in divorce in 1948. (2) details unknown to Dorothy Irene (1899-1977). Death: 2 April 1975 in Monreith Private Hospital, Toorak Gardens, Adelaide, South Australia. 

  • Arrived in Adelaide, South Australia, described as a farm worker, with his wife and daughters aboard the Esperance Bay in 1923. Gained work at Bagshaw Ltd, Mile End, later known as Horwood-Bagshaw.
  • Joined SA branch of the Federated Moulders’ (Metals) Union in 1923. Part-time secretary of the SA branch in 1936-1938 and full-time secretary from 1938 until he retired in 1966.
  • Federal councillor in 1940 and later became member on federal executive. Elected federal president in 1958, on the death of William Miller of Victoria. President of Triennial Conference Victoria in 1958.
  • Cause of death: myocardial degeneration (1 year) and broncho pneumonia (10 days).
