Frederick John Morris (1844-1918) seaman, trade union official and poultry farmer 

Birth: 25 December 1844 at Arle, Cheltenham, Worcestershire, England, son of John Morris, gardener, and Maria, née Hinchcliffe, tailoress.  Marriages: (1) 24 April 1871 in the parish church of St Stephen, Worcester, England to Jane Plumb (1844-1911). They had one daughter. (2) 1917 at Perth, Western Australia, to Mary Ann Donnelly. Death: 11 November 1918 at the Old Men’s Home, Claremont, Western Australia. Religion: buried with Anglican rites. 

  • Arrived in South Australia about 1872. Lived at Port Adelaide.
  • Secretary of Seamen’s Union in South Australia in the 1880s. President of the United Trades and Labor Council in 1886.
  • President of Fourth Intercolonial Trades Union Congress, 1886. Secretary of the then newly-formed Maritime Labour Council (MLC) at Port Adelaide.
  • Appointed justice of the peace.
  • In 1888 proposed to leave SA for Wimmera district in Victoria to engage in farming.
  • Moved to Western Australia about 1890. Worked as a poultry farmer at Jandakot and was later a labourer.
  • Described as a poultry farmer on his death certificate. Cause of death: senile decay.
