Stephen John (Steve) Morgan (1916-2010) coalminer, trade union official 

Birth: 30 March 1916 at Toowoomba, Queensland, son of Queensland-born parents Stephen John (Jack) Morgan (1892-1978), coal miner, and Bridget (Biddy), née Curran (1891-1969). Marriage: 21 March 1936 to native-born Isabel Blanche Freeman (1916-2012). They had two sons. Death: in 2010 at Ipswich, Queensland. 

  • Coalminer at Darling Downs, Queensland, from 1934. During 1949 coal strike, he and Col McDonald were the only two members of the Sugarloaf branch of Miners' Federation to support strike to the end.
  • After the strike, with McDonald, Morgan set out to change the branch leadership, becoming secretary. Leader of Sugarloaf staydown strike of January 1959.
  • Member of federation's Queensland board of management in 1960s. District vice-president from 1963 to 1969.
  • After Sugarloaf's closure (1969), he worked at Sirius Creek. Was Queensland District check inspector from 1972 until he retired in 1976.
