Mooney, Michael Augustus (Mick) (1881-1959) builders’ labourer and trade union official

Birth: 22 May 1881, at Sale, Gippsland, Victoria, son of Irish-born parents John Mooney (1828-1901), from Waterford, and Margaret, née Barry (1834-1919), from Dublin. Marriage: 1904 at Sale, Victoria, to Lydia Ann Camm (1878-1956), born at Springvale, Victoria. They had one daughter and three sons. Death: 21 December 1959 in his usual residence at Willis Street, Prahran, Melbourne. 

  • Served apprenticeship on family farm. Moved to Melbourne and worked in building industry.
  • Leading scaffolder on construction of Public Library, St Patrick’s Cathedral and the Myer Emporium.
  • Union official for fifty years. Organiser for Builders’ Labourers Federation from 1919 to 1930. First organiser to enrol members at Yallourn, in about 1930.
  • In 1931 union delegate to Annual Conference of the Australian Labor Party (Victoria).
  • Later vice-president of the Victorian branch of the Miscellaneous Workers’ Union. MWU delegate to Trades Hall Council from about 1944 until his death.
  • Cause of death: arteriosclerosis with coronary symptoms (years).
