Dugald (Doug) McLean, also known as Dougald (1884-1961) shipwright and trade union official 

Birth: 1884 at Paisley, Renfrewshire, Scotland, son of Scottish-born parents Duncan McLean (1857-1932), ploughman, from Paisley, Renfrewshire, and Ann, née Macphail (1865-1939), from the Isle of Mull. Marriage: 1916 at Auburn, Victoria, to native-born Myrtle Florence Grant (1893-1990). They had four sons. Death: 8 June 1961 at Royal Melbourne Hospital, Parkville; usual residence Ophir Street, Moonee Ponds, Melbourne. 

  • In 1891 Scotland census was an apprenticed ships’ carpenter at Greenock, West.
  • Described as a “farm hand”, he arrived in Melbourne, Victoria, from London aboard the RMS Orama on 24 March 1913. First lived at Williamstown and worked as a shipwright.
  • Executive member of the Federated Shipwrights and Ship Constructors’ Association of Australia (FSCAA) from about 1918 to 1958. Represented the association on the Melbourne Trades Hall Council. Secretary of the FSCAA from about 1933 until he retired in 1958.
  • Member of the Australian Labor Party for many years.
  • Cause of death: perforated duodenal ulcer (hours), chronic peptic ulcer (years), myocardial infarction (weeks) and bronchopneumonia (days).
