Herbert (Bert) McClintock (1906-1985) artist and cartoonist

Birth: 20 November 1906 at Subiaco, Perth, son of South Australian-born parents William McClintock (1880-1965), engraver, and Ada Julia, née Cramond (1879-1957). Marriages: (1) 8 September 1933 at St Paul’s Terrace, Evangelistic Mission, Fortitude Valley, Brisbane, to a divorcée Eileen Patricia, née Carolin, late Partridge (1906-?), a stenographer, born at Heidelberg, Transvaal, South Africa. The marriage ended in divorce in 1951. (2) 23 February 1951 at the Registrar General’s Office, Sydney, New South Wales, to Marie Louise Berry (1931-?), a singer. They had two sons. Death: 16 April 1985 at Royal North Shore Hospital, St Leonards, Sydney; usual residence Phoenix Street, Lane Cove. 

  • His first wife Eileen was a law clerk who worked for Christine Jollie Smith and was a member of the Communist Party of Australia in 1930.
  • Bert was a cartoonist for Tribune (Sydney) and from 1940s and mid-1970s for Common Cause.
  • Cause of death: hepatic failure (3 months), hepatic cirrhosis (3 years) and alcoholic liver disease (20 years).
  • Nephew of artist Alexander McClintock (1869-1922).
