William Henry (Bill) Massey (1873-1930) waterside worker and trade union official

Birth: 1873 at Geelong, Victoria, son of native-born William John (John) Massey (1841-1905), labourer, and Margaret, née Daly (1841-1927), born in Ireland. Marriage: 1897 at Geelong to Annie Esther Curran (1874-1953), born at Manchester, England. They had three daughters and five sons. Death: 17 November 1930 in hospital at Geelong; usual residence Myers Street, Geelong. 

  • Honorary secretary of Geelong Wharf Laborers’ Union for thirty years until it amalgamated with the Port Phillip Stevedores’ Association [in the 1920s?].
  • President of Geelong Trades Hall from 1909 to 1911, when he was honoured as “Geelong’s chief unionist”. Chief mover in having the new Trades Hall built in Myers Street, Geelong.
  • Prominent in Eight Hours’ Day celebrations in Geelong until his death.
  • Secretary of Geelong Trades and Labor Council from 1909 to his death.
  • Cause of death: cerebral haemorrhage.
