Luka Louis Markovich (1902-1999) labourer, miner, community activist

Birth: 15 October, or 8 November 1902 at Brtcheli, Montenegro, Yugoslavia. Marriage: by 1941 to Milica, other details unknown. Death: 13 September 1999 in Western Australia. Religion: Greek Orthodox [stated on service record]. 

  • Following his brother Yugo [?Ivan] Markovich to Australia, he arrived in Adelaide aboard the Ormonde on 28 June 1927.
  • In 1934 was residing at South Johnstone, North Queensland, when he was naturalised on 23 July. He worked as a canecutter there in 1936 and 1937.
  • Was a miner living at Boulder, Western Australia, when he enlisted in the Australian Military Forces on 24 December 1941. Served in New Guinea with the 2nd 1st Tank Attack Regiment, Royal Australian Artillery, from February to December 1945.
  • Discharged from the army on 23 January 1946. In October that year he was described as Western Australian secretary of the Yugoslav Migrants Association.
  • Leader of the Yugoslav Immigrants’ Association of Western Australia to about 1958.
