John Thomas (Jack) Mangan (c.1889-1951)

Birth: c.1889. Married: Veronica Toohey, a tailoress, on 26 February 1921 at South Melbourne, Victoria. They had no children. Death: 2 June 1951. Warrnambool, Victoria. 

  • Driving in Timber Section of transport industry;
  • Well known on track from wharf in Melbourne city to Box Hill;
  • Joined Transport Workers’ Union, 1910, when a five-horse driver;
  • Promoted to foreman on timber wharf and when workers went on strike he joined them, 1928?;
  • Organiser, Transport Workers’ Union, 1929-c.1951; Treasurer, Vic. State Exec. Committee; Member, Federal Council on several occasions and trustee for one term;
  • Union rep. National Safety Council; J.P., which helped in his organising role being able to assist members who attracted traffic breaches;
  • Member, ALP South Melbourne branch; Assisted in returning Labor candidates to State and Federal parliaments;
  • President, South Melbourne Social Club;
  • Life Governor, Prince Henry Hospital 1940; Life Governor and Committee member, Sportsmen’s Ward of Prince Henry Hospital;
  • Committee member, St. Vincent’s Hospital Appeals.
