Charles William Lyall (1904–1976) butcher and trade union activist

Birth: 27 December 1903 at White Hill, Bendigo, Victoria, son of native-born parents Henry Govett Lyall (1867-1930), butcher, and Mary Jane, née Fraser (1872-1946). Marriage: 1926 at Bendigo, Victoria, to Jean Elizabeth Hardy (1904-1988), born in Bendigo. They had one daughter and two sons. Death: 13 July 1976 at Bendigo; usual residence Ophir Street, Golden Square. Religion: Methodist. 

  • Member of the Bendigo branch of the Australasian Meat Industry Employees’ Union, and treasurer, for more than fifty years. President on several occasions.
  • Member of the Australian Labor Party’s Golden Square branch for forty years. Member Eppalock Committee, the Sound Shell Committee, and the Olympic Pool Committee.
  • Cause of death: coronary occlusion (10 minutes) and coronary arteriosclerosis (6 years).
