John Thomas (Jack) Lonergan (1902-1979) waterside worker and trade union official

Birth: 29 May 1902 at Hobart, Tasmania, son of native-born parents David Lonergan (1858-1918), labourer, and Louise, née Coe (1860-1928). Marriage: 24 July 1926 at Hobart, to Euphemia Gladys (Effie) Sherrin (1894-1984). Death: 16 April 1979 in his residence at Malunnna Road, Lindisfarne, Tasmania. 

  • Educated at Wapping and Bathurst schools. Joined maritime industry and went to sea at age of 17.
  • Joined Waterside Workers’ Federation, Hobart branch, in 1919. Federal councillor, WWF, in 1936. General president, WWF, from 1939 to 1950. Hobart branch president, WWF for thirty-five years almost in a continuous sequence.
  • Member and deputy chairman of the Stevedoring Industry Commission set up after World War II to organise labour and handle convoy cargo.
  • Retired in 1967.
