Frederick (Fred) Harris (1870-1942) bootmaker and trade union official

Birth: 25 December 1870 at Brisbane, Queensland, son of Thomas Harris, labourer, and Anne, née Fowle (1842-1903), dressmaker. Marriage: 5 March 1895 at Brisbane, to native-born Margaret Ann Leah Ashlin (1878-1961). They had two sons and one daughter. Death: 23 June 1942 at Red Hill, Brisbane. Religion: Methodist. 

  • President, Boot Trade Union of Brisbane; involved in 1905 bootmakers’strike in Queensland.
  • Secretary of the Queensland branch of the Australian Boot Trade Employees Federation from 1907 to-1942; representative of Queensland Branch on Federal Council of Australian Boot Trade Employees Federation; President of the Australian Boot Trade Employees Federation 1922.
  • Assistant Secretary, Eight-Hour Committee; member of Brisbane General Strike Committee 1912; member of Queensland Repatriation Committee for 11 years.
  • Queensland industrial agent for the Commonwealth Statistician for 25 years.
  • Assisted in founding the Boot Trade Provident Fund of the Queensland branch.
  • Cause of death: coronary occlusion and heart failure.
