Charles Lawrence (Larry) Glover (1920–2002)

Glover, Charles Lawrence (Larry) (1920-2002) telephone technician and trade union official 

Birth: 24 May 1920 at Hamilton, Victoria, son of native-born parents Patrick James Glover, hotel keeper (1891-1950) and Rose, née Hammer (1895-1968). Marriage: 17 January 1945 at Christ Church, Warrnambool, to native-born Mavis Elsie Sanderson (1922-2012). They had two children. Death: 14 March 2002 at Kensington, Victoria. 

  • Joined the federal public service as a junior mechanic in training in 1937, and the union (then Australian Postal Electricians’ Union) in 1938.
  • Secretary of Wonthaggi branch of the Australian Labor Party from 1957 to 1959 and of the Frankston branch from 1959 to 1960.
  • Teletechnician and full-time Victorian branch secretary of the Postal Telecommunication Technicians Association (Australia) (PTTAA) from 1960 to 1964. Elected federal councillor in 1960. General secretary from 1964 to 1970.
  • Industrial officer of the PTTAA, later the Australian Telecommunications Employees Association (ATEA), from 1973 to 1978.
  • Secretary of the high council of the Commonwealth Public Service Associations and contributors’ representative on the Superannuation Board. ‘Guided the ATEA into the modern era of industrial relations’.
  • Attended management courses at Monash University, Mt Eliza Australian Administrative Staff College. Won Churchill Fellowship to Ruskin College, Oxford University.
