James Gibson (1851-1927) tailor and trade union leader

Birth: 24 November 1851 at Paisley, Scotland, son of John Gibson (1823-1877), soldier, weaver and later ironworker, and Janet, née McAllister (1825-1871). Marriage: 1877 at Abbotsford, Victoria, to Jane Ann Snoswell Murray (1855-1930), born in Adelaide, South Australia. They had one daughter and one son. Death: 1 January 1927 at North Carlton, Melbourne. 

  • Arrived in Victoria with parents and siblings on 16 October 1852. Attended Young Traders School (tailoring), Collingwood, Melbourne.
  • Joined Tailors’ Protective Society 1873. President, secretary, Federated Clothing Trades Society and treasurer from 1885 to 1922.
  • Officiated on Victorian Wages Board from 1904 to 1910. Missed only one union executive meeting between 1907 and 1922.
