William Thomas Corby (1886–1928)

Corby, William Thomas ‘Bill’(1886-1928) engine driver, fitter and turner and trade union leader 

Birth: 1886 at Kyneton, Victoria, son of native-born parents John Patrick Michael Corby (1860-1930), hotel keeper, and Susan, née Travers (1861-1933). Marriage: 31 August 1912 at Kyneton to Victorian-born Alice Cuddihy (1878-1957). They had one daughter and two sons; the eldest child was 13 at Corby’s death. Death: 21 April 1928 in his home at West Hobart, Tasmania. 

  • Moved to Tasmania about 1903. Resided at Queenstown. Was a member of the Queenstown hospital board.
  • Sometime federal president, Federated Engine Drivers & Firemen’s Association. Secretary of Hobart branch from 1923 to his death. Secretary of the Storemen and Packers’ union and its branch representative to Denison Divisional council of Australian Labor Party.
  • Secretary of Hobart branch of the Merchant Service Guild.
  • President Hobart Trades Hall Council.
  • Government representative on the Hobart Hospital Board and the Sea Fisheries Board.
  • Agent in Tasmania for the Australian Workers’ Union.
