James (Jim) Churchett (1922-2017?) printing machinist and trade union leader

Birth: 18 August 1922 in Adelaide, son of English-born parents William Joseph Churchett (1883-1942), labourer, and Rosetta May, née Cheeseman (1893-1986). Marriage: 19 March 1949 at Unitarian Church, Wakefield Street, Adelaide, to Marjorie O. R. Butler. They had one son and one daughter. Death: possibly on 22 April 2017 at Magill, South Australia. Religion: Anglican. 

  • Was working as a salesman at Magill, SA, when he was called up for full-time duty in the Citizen Military Forces from 15 December 1941. Posted to the Royal Australian Artillery. Transferred to the Australian Imperial Force on 11 June 1942. Served in several Australian States and at Morotai and Balikpapan, Indonesia, returning to South Australia in January 1946. Discharged from the AIF on 11 July 1946 .
  • After WW II worked in Darwin and later as rotary machinist with News Ltd, Adelaide. From 1953 was actively involved with SA Branch of Printing and Kindred Industries Union when representative from News Ltd machine room chapel on union board of management. In 1954 was father of chapel and from 1955 deputy father of News Ltd combined chapel.
  • Member of Federal Newspaper Log Committee, 1955, 1956 and 1958. Branch vice-president 1955. Assistant secretary/organiser 1955-61 when elected secretary-treasurer, holding that position until retirement in 1976. Evincing his dedication he once took annual leave to study printing and box factories in Melbourne.
  • Active in Australian Labor Party (Magill sub-branch).
