Arthur Vincent Carroll (1886–1967)

Arthur Vincent Carroll (1886-1967) tailor and trade union leader 

Birth: 25 May 1886 at Patricks Plains [Singleton], New South Wales, son of native-born parents Patrick Carroll (1851-1929), labourer, and Margaret Helena, née McDonald (1859-1913). Marriage: 1912 at New Lambton, NSW, to Isabel Bell (1888-1973). They had a daughter and two sons. Death: 7 February 1967 in a private hospital at Raymond Terrace, NSW. Religion: Catholic. 

  • Apprenticed to tailoring, c.1900. Joined Australian Labor Party in 1910. Was a tailor in Cessnock, then in the 1920s moved to Stockton, Newcastle, where he lived for many years.
  • Vice-president and president of the Journeymen Tailor’s Association. Elected secretary, Newcastle sub-branch, Federated Clothing Trades Employees’ Union, in 1923 and retained the post for 37 years. Experienced industrial advocate, conducting many cases before industrial tribunals.
  • Co-organised meeting in Newcastle to establish committee to support unemployed, c.1929. Active election campaigner for ALP in Newcastle area. President of ALP’s Newcastle Electorate Council.
  • Vice-president, Newcastle Trades Hall Council. President for three years during 1930s Depression.
  • Member of the Board of Directors of Newcastle Hospital. President, Newcastle Ambulance Committee, representing committee on NSW Transport Board.
  • Associated with establishment of first old-age and invalid pensioners’ association in Newcastle.
  • Cause of death: myocardial infarction, arteriosclerosis and abdominal aneurysm.
