Robert Cameron  [junior] (1888-1970) miner, trade union official and politician 

Birth: 29 August 1888 at Minmi, New South Wales, eldest of nine children of Robert Cameron (1863-1932), a miner and trade union official born at Glasgow, Scotland, and native-born Isabella (Isabel), née Bower (1866-1936). Marriage: 16 February 1916 at Wallsend, to native-born Grace Elizabeth Buxton (1897-1963), a dressmaker and miner’s daughter. They had two daughters. Death: 21 May 1970 at  Wallsend. Religion: Presbyterian. 

  • Educated at Plattsburgh public school, began work at Wallsend colliery aged 14. Miner until election to parliament. Member of Miners’ Federation, secretary of Wallsend Lodge.
  • Prominent in friendly societies. Trustee of Wallsend soccer club. A racegoer. Foundation secretary of Wallsend branch of the Australian Labor Party.
  • Member of the Legislative Assembly for Wallsend from 8 October 1927 to 18 September 1930 and for Waratah from 15 October 1930 to 6 February 1956 (retired).
  • Appointed OBE in 1963.
