Self educated. Originally bush worker, served in First AIF. Joined Engineering Department, GPO, Queensland as linesman in interwar years. 1944-1962, President, Queensland Branch of Amalgamated Postal Workers Union (APWU), formerly member of union committee of management. 1957-59, General President, APWU. Delegate to ALP, Trades & Labor Council, Queensland Trade Union Congress. Attended ACTU conferences. Prominent in defeat of Industrial Groups in union. 1957, ALP Senate candidate, ‘A giant of a man physically and mentally’.
