Allan Dunlop Aitken (1889- 1974) trade union official

Born: 15 November 1889, Mackay, Queensland, the son of Allan Dunlop Aitken and Annie nee Shearer. Married: Lillie Alice Gill in Queensland in 1912. They had one daughter. Died: 27 December 1974 at Brisbane, Queensland.

  • First full-time secretary of Queensland Branch, Amalgamated Postal Workers Union (APWU), holding this position from 1925-1946.
  • Also engaged in business as a public accountant.
  • Served as delegate to union national conferences, having been delegate to first annual conference of APWU.
  • Assiduous in visiting outback Queensland and attentive to members’ grievances; ‘a great pioneer of post office trade unionism in Australia’.
