Louis Norman Wickham (1879-1971) blacksmith, trade union leader 

Birth: 1879 in Goulburn, New South Wales, son of English-born Robert Wickham (1851-1896), engine-driver, and Ann Jane Smith, who was born in Sydney. Marriage: 1909 in Newtown, Sydney, NSW, to Ethel Madeline Porthouse. They had three daughters. Death: 31 March 1971 in hospital at Hornsby, Sydney, NSW. Religion: Anglican

  • His father was killed when passing Beecroft, Sydney, on 11 June 1896 when he fell from his railway locomotive engine being driven from Sydney to Newcastle and broke his neck. He had been one of the oldest drivers in the service.
  • Lou was an apprenticed blacksmith, Cockatoo Island in Sydney. Worked as a blacksmith for 25 yrs.
  • Joined Amalgamated Society of Engineers (later AEU) in 1900. Branch secretary, district delegate, Commonwealth Council trustee. Delegate to 1915 Rules Revision Meeting in Manchester England in 1915. Delegate to two rules revision meetings in Australia. Secretary, Commonwealth Council AEU from 1922 to 1944 (retired).
  • Was a justice of the peace.
  • Cause of death: cerebral haemorrhage and cerebral arteriosclerosis
