Joseph Standen Wing (c. 1810–1895)

Wing, Joseph Standen (1812-1895) clerk, boot- and shoe-maker and accountant 

Birth: about 1810 in London, England, son of John Wing (1783-c.1843), clerk, and Mary, née Standen (1790-1864). Marriage: 14 January 1836 in the parish of St Leonards, Shoreditch, London, to Isabella Jane Haines (1817-1903). They had seven daughters and four sons. Death: 27 April 1895 in his home at Ross Street, Richmond, Melbourne, Victoria. 

  • Was a clerk living at Shoreditch, London, in 1841.
  • Arrived in Adelaide, South Australia, with his family in about 1847 and engaged in business as a publican in Adelaide. He was a freemason and sometime secretary of the Adelaide Masonic Hall Association.
  • Moved to Victoria with his family in December 1856. He was a boot and shoe maker, living at Oxford Street, East Collingwood, Melbourne, in 1859, and was described as a clerk in 1872, and as an accountant in the 1880s.
  • Either he or his son may have been the Joseph Wing who participated in a conference of delegates of the Freethought Association in Australia and New Zealand in 1883.
  • From 16 October 1880 the family lived at Collingwood, later moving to Richmond.
  • Either he or his son Joseph may have published the Spiritual (?) at Sandhurst and The Referment (?).
  • Was described as aged 85, occupation “gentleman” on his death certificate.
  • Cause of death: cerebral paralysis (14 weeks).
  • His brother Philip (1833-1918), a jeweller, also came to South Australia in the 1850s and moved to Melbourne with him in 1856.
