Charles Frederick Webber (1906–1981)

Charles Frederick Haughey Webber (1906-1981) waterside worker, trade union official and community worker.

Birth: 13 August 1906 at Bunbury, Western Australia, son of Frederick Webber (1872-1951), a waterside worker born in South Australia, and Mary Catherine [or Kathleen], née Haughey (1882-1960), born at Warragul, Victoria. Marriage: 31 May 1930 at Bunbury, WA, to native-born Katie Magdelena Horsman (1910-2011). They had four daughters and three sons. Death: 8 November 1981 in his usual residence at Halsey Street, Bunbury. Religion: Catholic. 

  • Webber joined the Waterside Workers’ Federation (WWF) in 1925 and was Bunbury branch president for fourteen years. Was secretary of the Bunbury branch of the WWF from 1958 to 1972.
  • From the 1950s to the early 1960s he served on the federal council of the WWF as WA Outports representative. Served fourteen years with the Bunbury Port Authority.
  • Was president of the Bunbury branch of the Australian Labor Party for many years and was the endorsed local parliamentary candidate three times, though defeated. Became a life member of the WA and Bunbury ALP.
  • President of South Bunbury State School and Bunbury High School Parents and Citizens Association for ten years. Vice President of the South-West National Football League and foundation member of the Bunbury Trotting Club Committee.
  • Webber “combined a spirit of service to his fellow townfolk with service to the Federation”.
  • Cause of death: uraemia (years) and chronic nephritis (years).
