Maria Waterhouse was born the child of convict Elizabeth Barnes of the Lady Juliana and acting third lieutenant Henry Waterhouse. After the death of her mother, she was sent to England to join the her father's Waterhouse family in 1796. In later life, she had an independent income and occasionally lived with her Guningham cousins.
