ROLAND GRANT WARD was born on 29th March, 1892, at Cundletown, New South Wales, the son of Mr. Edward Freer Ward and Mrs. Mabel Ward. He was educated at the Church of England Grammar School, North Sydney, and joined the staff of the Bank at Head Office on 28th September, 1909.

Roland Grant Ward enlisted in the A.I.F. on 14th January, 1915, and left Australia the following April. About that time he was promoted to corporal. He left Egypt for Gallipoli as a member of the 13th Battalion on 13th July, and was promoted to sergeant in the following month. He was killed in action there on 27th August, 1915.
