Rodney William Samuel Tuckerman was born on 14th March, 1898, at Mudgee, New South Wales, and is the son of Mr. Charles Henry and Mrs. Gertrude Sarah Tuckerman. He was educated at the Mudgee District School, and joined the Bank’s service at Gulargambone on 27th February, 1914. He was transferred to Portland in September, 1915.
Rodney Tuckerman enlisted in the A.I.F. on 11 th December, 1915, and subsequently became a member of the 54th Battalion. During his service he was promoted to lance-corporal on 10th January, 1917; to corporal on 30th May, and was appointed lance-sergeant on 1st November, and promoted to temporary-sergeant on 27th November, 1917. He received his promotion to second-lieutenant in June, 1918, and as lieutenant in the following September.
For bravery during the Battle of Bullecourt in May, 1917, Rodney Tuckerman was awarded the Military Medal. The official proclamation in the “London Gazette” of 17th July, 1917, was as follows:
“His Majesty the King has been graciously pleased to award the Military Medal for bravery in the field to the undermentioned non-commissioned officer—5097, Lance-corporal R. W. S. Tuckerman, Infantry.”
