Llewellyn (Lyn) Gilbert Truscott (1884-1927), boxer

Birth: 2 January 1884 at Newcastle, New South Wales, son of Edwin Truscott Gill (1846-1927), born at Pembroke, Wales, United Kingdom, and Matilda Lucy, née Maguire (1854-1906), born at Armagh, Ireland. Marriage: 5 July 1911 at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Carlton, Victoria, to Agnes Grace Holloway (1894-1984). They had one daughter and one son. Death: 27 January 1936 at Botany, Sydney, New South, Wales. Religion: Anglican (on service record)

  • won the Lightweight Championship of Australia in 1908 and 1909.
  • won the Welterweight Championship of New Zealand in 1912.
  • by 1913 he was living in Hobart, refereeing boxing matches and was the lessee of a pub.
  • in 1915 he was sentenced to six months gaol for larceny. He was described in the 1915 Tasmanian Police Gazette (18 March, p 73) as having 11 gold-filled teeth.
  • served in the Australian Imperial Force in World War I, and was twice wounded in action in France.
  • committed suicide at Botany Golf Links, Sydney, in 1936.
