It is believed that Sarah Ann Piper was conceived in Sydney in the months prior to March 1793 when John Piper was transferred to Norfolk Island aboard the Kitty transport.
It is not known who her mother was. Some argue it was Sarah Atkins the daughter of NSW Corps soldier John Atkins who had arrived in the colony aboard the Admiral Barrington in 1791. It has also been argued that DNA evidence suggests she was the daughter of Elizabeth Youngson/Youngster.
Sarah Ann Piper, also known as Sally, was supported by John Piper and was accepted as his adopted daughter. She married Alfred Thrupp on 2 May 1814 at St Philips Sydney; the couple had at least seven children. Thrupp had been John Piper's assistant and sold his 700 acres grant of land at Neutral Bay to John Piper after the couple moved to Van Diemen's Land in 1817.
Sarah Ann Thrupp died on 24 July 1860 at Elderslie, Tasmania, and was buried on 26 July 1860 at St Marks, Pontville. Her cause of death was given as 'decline'.
